Intertwined?

Are we so intertwined with the place we were born, the color of our skin, our sex, our sexual preference and our social background that this creates who we are?

Is there a way not to base what we believe to be on circumstances, facts or preferences? Is there any space for change if we have a firm belief of who we are?
